NOTES: Robert Pete Williams was born on March 14, 1914 in Zachary, Louisiana, where he lived with his family until they moved to Scotlandville, near Baton Rouge, in 1928. He stayed there until 1956 when he was convicted of murder (he insisted it was self-defense) and sent to infamous Angola State Penitentiary. He was paroled in 1959 after Governor Long of Louisiana had heard some of the blues Robert Pete had recorded for the Folk Lyric label that year. His five-year parole was spent sharecropping for a farmer in denham Springs. Robert Pete was truly free only in 1964, the year in which he appeared at the Newport Folk Festival. Since then, Robert pete has been booked for countless festivals and college concerts.
Robert Pete Williams died of a heart attack in Rosedale, Louisiana on New Year's Eve, 1980.
