Notes
Originally recorded in the early ’80s featuring the cream of L.A. session players, as well as a number of New Orleans natives. Ronnie Barron has always been one of the great unsung New Orleans Piano legends. He produced Dr. John’s first album Gris Gris. He also played piano on the original Dr. John albums Sun, Moon and Herbs, ”Gumbo”, ”Hollywood Be Thy Name” as well as ”Gris Gris”. It is said Ronnie Barron is the missing link from the legendary black piano players – Professor Longhair, James Booker etc. – to the white players such as Dr. John.
Ronnie Barron may very well be one of the greatest musicians you never heard. A self taught genius of New Orleans piano, Ronnie captures the true spirit of his home town. This collection paints a vivid picture of his musical heritage. His renditions of standards like “Trick Bag” shine with an authenticity seldom heard in covers. He absolutely captures the funky groove of Henry Roeland Byrd (aka Professor Longhair) with “Big Chief” and “Hey Now Baby”. He tips a hat to some of the early work he did with Mac Rebennack (Dr. John) with “Lights Out”. I dare you not to smile ear to ear when you listen to the raunchy “Doing Something Wrong”. Ronnie was always a ardent fan of traditional New Orleans gospel groups. On this CD you are treated to a stirring rendition of “Singing In My Soul” backed by the Chambers Brothers. This CD was originally released as Blue Delicacies Vol 1, for you collectors out there. Do yourself a favor and buy this!
