Jimmy Buffett’s 7th Studio Album
Featuring the smash hit “Margaritaville” and the classic title track
“Changes In Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes,” released in January of 1977, was Jimmy Buffett’s breakthrough 7th album, and remains his biggest-selling studio album. It is notable for his biggest single, “Margaritaville,” which peaked at #1 on the Billboard adult contemporary charts in both the U.S. and Canada, and which also was a top-20 crossover hit on the country charts. The title track also went above #50 on both the Hot 100 and Country charts.
The album itself peaked at #2 on the Country charts and was among the top-selling country and pop albums of the year. It was eventually certified Platinum.
“Margaritaville” and this LP elevated Buffett from Southern cult party-song strummer into a national and even international pop icon, with a Hawaiian-shirted image of unabashed booziness and escapism. The record also popularized the cocktail of the same name. The song is ranked 234th on the RIAA “Songs of the Century” list and is in the Grammy Hall of Fame for its cultural significance.
