Notes
The 18 performance presented here represent a template for small ensembles that continues to this day, and likely will endure as long as there are jazz groups. They are also hallmarked by some of the most profound and perpetually influential solos ever hears, anywhere. The genius of cornetist, Louis Armstrong (1901-1971) was in full flower during the mid-to-late 1920s when, at the helm of his Hot Five, then Hot Seven, he forged one incandescent, epic solo after another. He was, concurrently, beginning to create a vocal style that would come to define the swinging American approach to a song, one that would be adopted in various ways by singers everywhere.
