Notes
For this chapter of his Flea Circus chronicles, the mighty Pete Siers has paired up with monster pianist Carl Sonny Leyland for an uplifting album of boogie and blues interspersed with old time melodies, amiably swung and sung. The chemistry between these two master musicians works wonders. If you need a little pick me up, try Roses of Picardy, a chestnut from 1916 which in their capable hands becomes a wild raggy barrelhouse jam.
Gratifying manifestations of the woogie element include Three Miles Till Empty, the thundering Rim Shot Boogie and the Cow Cow Blues which really kicks like a mule. Anyone who has ever witnessed Pete emerging from behind the drum set brandishing his washboard with a determined gleam in his eye can testify that he is a force to be reckoned with. While he mainly sticks with the skins on this album, Pete’s washboard dexterity is on display during the bouncy Fisherman’s Blues.
What this world needs are more skilfully tendered tributes to Chicago piano man Jimmy Yancey (1895-1951). For Yancy Pants Mr. Leyland, who was born in England and first landed in the U.S. by way of New Orleans, shifts nonchalantly into Yancey’s signature Crescent City walking bassline. As for the instrumental I Wish I Could (Have Told My 20yr. Old Self) Blues, no words were necessary – the piano says it all.
