Notes

In the Cajun tradition in south Louisiana, music is meant for dancing. If you can’t dance to it, music — no matter how good — will be discarded for something that invites the dancers onto the floor for a waltz or a two-step. This collection of traditional Cajun songs fits the dance bill, with plenty of waltzes and two-steps to keep the dancers happy. The songs are performed by a variety of musicians, from the legendary Dewey Balfa to Nathan Abshire, Belton Richard, and “the Cajun Hank Williams,” D.L. Menard. Some lesser-known but talented musicians also contribute to the mix, including Sheryl Cormier, le Band Passepartout, the Jambalaya Cajun Band, and Cajun Gold. Among the tunes are classics such as Balfa’s “When I Was Poor” and Menard’s signature piece, “La Porte d’En Arrière.” Nathan Abshire performs accordion magic on his “Pine Grove Blues.” Lively two-steps such as “Swallow Two-Step” and waltzes like “La Valse de la Vie” will keep the dancers on their feet. And what Cajun dance compilation would be complete without the ubiquitous “Jolie Blonde”? This version is performed by Belton Richard. Now everyone can go home from the dance happy.
